Artists and Tech Gadgets: The Digital Photo Frame

Some artists like using new tech gadgets, especially digital photographers, but other artists are more reluctant to do anything artistic with computers or electronic devices. Nonetheless, digital photo frames are a great tool for any artist-tech savvy or not. These frames were made primarily to display people’s digital photos. As digital cameras became more prevalent, people started having more and more digital photos. The problem that many people ran into was that you needed a computer to view digital photos, and it was relatively expensive to print so many photos. As a result, these digital frames were created so that people could display hundreds (if not thousands) of their digital photos in one place without having to use their computer.Display Your ArtNo matter the medium, you can use digital photo frames to display your art. Obviously, if you are a photographer they are great for displaying your photos. You can set up the frame in your house or your studio and show off your work. However, even if you are not a photographer, you can photograph your work and display it on your frame. This is a great option if you want to show someone your work, but you do not want to lug three dozen large canvases to your friend’s house or your teacher’s office. They are also a great way to display your digital media. Do you do graphic design on your computer or do you create digital artwork? If so, you can format these images to be displayed on your frame. Most frames will at least show JPEG images, and some frames can display multiple image formats. This leads to how they are also useful promotional tools.Promote YourselfDo you ever go to an art show or a bridal expo or anything where you set up a table (or a station) to show off your work or sell your work, and promote yourself? If so, you need to take your digital photo frame with you. You usually cannot take all of your work to an art sale or expo, but you can load your frame with photos of all of your work. First, the frame is bright and changes periodically, so it will attract people to your area. Second, someone might see a piece they like that you did not happen to bring. Now, you can arrange to meet them later to possibly sell the piece. If you are looking for a good frame to use to promote yourself, you should look for a slightly larger frame, twelve to fifteen inches if you can afford it. This is because these frames are even more eye-catching, and they let people see the details of your work. Digital photo frames are relatively easy to use, and you can easily set one up in a few minutes. They are also relatively inexpensive, and you can find a wide variety of frames for less than $100. These two features make these frames great promotional tools, especially for the starving artist.

Legal Issues For Online Business – E-Commerce Web Solutions

There are some very important legal issues to be aware of when doing consignment selling. Some states and cities have regulations that require you to hold any consignment goods valued at over $100 for a period of up to ten days to give the police time to determine if they are stolen merchandise. In these situations, you have to fax the police a description of the merchandise and any serial numbers of computers, stereos, cameras, and so on. If you don’t hear back from them within seven to ten days, you can then go ahead and sell the item.Pro TipProtect Yourself from Illegal Activity
What is the best way to protect yourself from illegal activity? It is actually very easy. Create a sales policy that lays out this information:Anyone wanting you to sell goods has to provide a driver’s license, which you should photocopy. You explain to your consignors that you pay all consignment proceeds by check only and you will only mail the check to the address on the driver’s license.
Now any thief would be crazy to provide you his real name and address. If he is stupid enough to do this and the goods turn out to be stolen, you simply give the information to the police and you are legally off the hook. If anyone approaches you to sell goods and wants to be paid in cash, simply demonstrate them a copy of your (written) policies and explain that you are sorry, but this is the only way you will do business.Even if your location does not have any such regulations, you want to be very careful about selling stolen goods. I assure as soon as you advertise that you are an eBay consignment seller or open a consignment storefront, you will be approached by someone (or several people) attempting to sell stolen goods. If you do not take due caution, and the police determine that you have sold stolen goods, you can be in deep trouble.Getting HelpMost community universities/colleges offer courses in starting and running a small e-commerce web site business and some have free business resource centers that can help with all sorts of things you may run into.A great resource is SCORE. This stands for the Service Core of Retired Executives (http://www.score.org). SCORE is a government-sponsored volunteer organization of retired small business owners who provide consulting and advice to new startup business owners. These folks are often very well connected in the community and can introduce you to lots of valuable contacts. They can also be a source of potential investors.
Taking the time to set up and organize your e-commerce web business correctly will pay dividends almost immediately and save you time and energy as you build and grow your e-commerce site business.

Health Care Reform – As of Today

It came about last week. I was sitting in a State Conference for insurance professionals. I knew it was coming and I was ready to see if maybe THIS time, I would get more understanding than I had before. There was so much coming at me with regards to health care reform, I seemed to be in a tidal wave of information that seemed to change daily. The good news is, it was not just me. The bad news is, eve n many of those people “in charge” have little to no idea what is the 2,000 + pages of legislation called “health care reform”. A few things I came away with, I will share here…as well as an excellent bit of compiled info on some recent points to keep in mind for the coming months of 2010.1 – Don’t worry if health care reform seems confusing… it is. Many who felt health care reform would be a good thing for the United States, I feel, forgot how many cooks would be in the kitchen on this one. Sure, there were some “head chefs”, but everyone wanted to make it something good for them or the people they represented. Unfortunately, I also feel that all these “chefs” forgot to consider one party of people and that was others. They seemed to forget the masses of people this was supposed to help and instead focused on a plan so riddled with more questions than answers.2 – Health care reform will change even more. If you thought this bill was it, think again. If anything more could go wrong in our political administration I would be shocked. I just don’t see this group of “changers” lasting much past one term in office. With that said, one of the first things that will be adjusted and changed will be health care. No matter who takes over, the bill we currently are so concerned with and the bill that would take until 2014 to completely make itself known will change so dramatically we really won’t know anything until it’s all said and done.3 – We will be the ones to help make sense of it all. I write to many colleagues each and every week and one thing is certain… the insurance professionals will be the ones to be sure that the regular people know what health care reforms will effect the people we get an audience with. We as professional insurance agents and representatives will be the ones on the front lines making sure that our clients understand what is out there and how and/or what to do about it. If we work with companies and their benefits, we will be the ones those human resource professionals and business owners will be turning to for answers. Will you be ready. Start now and take a little each day to be more “up to date” than the agent down the street. It will help you stand out as “the go to” for health care reform answers.4 – We all have to share. If we get some great pieces of information, we need to share it as soon as we can with as many people as we can. The information about health care reform is not meant to be secret, but many have no idea where to get it. If you get a handle on some piece of this legisltation, share it. Share it in an article or a newsletter. Share it in speech or over coffee. When we share information, we keep all the facts on the table and together we can all work this out.Below is a compilation of some items to consider with regards to health care reform. Feel free to pass on any of them that you see fit for you and your situation:- Retiree Health Subsidy. For plans that satisfy various application and submission rules, the federal government will reimburse participating employers 80% of an early retiree’s (age 55 and over but not eligible for Medicare) health claims between $15,000 and $90,000. This program is to be effective as of June 23, 2010, and will cease upon the earlier of exhaustion of its $5 billion in funding or January 1, 2014.- Increased Resources. The Health Reform Bill allocates an additional $300 million to fight health care fraud and abuse over the next 10 years.- Transparency. Effective immediately, physician practices who provide their patients MRI, CT, and PET imaging services are required to inform those patients in writing of other suppliers in the community who can provide those services. The Health Reform Bill also requires disclosure of financial relationships between physicians, hospitals, pharmacists and other providers and manufacturers and distributors of certain drugs, devices, biologicals, and medical supplies.- Community Health Assessment.

What is a Commercial Loan Broker and Why You Should Use One?

A commercial loan broker is a specialist intermediary between businesses seeking funding and commercial lenders, acting on behalf of the client business. Taking advantage of the services provided by a commercial broker when seeking a business loan is essential where no established relationship exists with a bank or the client is not sure what the going rate is for any particular funding type. The consequences could be that any business loan taken is over priced, that could be a very costly mistake indeed! The typical broker will have access to a network of lenders and have specific knowledge of any loan criteria, thereby allowing the targeting of the right lender for any set of business requirements and circumstances, therefore maximising the chances of a successful application. Many customers of commercial loan brokers have usually already approached a bank and had a loan application turned down, sometimes more than once! The reasons for this are numerous but could be as simple as the client not presenting their business plan very well, insufficient security or maybe the client is regarded as sub-prime by the bank lenders. However once a business has exhausted the bank route, few have the knowledge of where to go next. In fact, approaching a commercial loan specialist in the first place could have resulted in the placement of the financial requirement with the right lender first time!A good commercial broker will initially take the time to understand your business and future plans before approaching any lender. If the business proposition has the potential to be financed then the broker will package the deal, select the most appropriate lender or lenders and ensure that any offer is priced competitively.Brokers normally make a commission on any business loan placed, but not always, some will always charge a broker fee, others will only charge where no commission is available. The most important thing where a fee is charged is that it is success based, upfront broker fees should be avoided at all costs! One possible exception to this is where a business plan does not exist and your intermediary offers this service.

Employment Law – How to Make it Work For You in a Recession!

As every media outlet in the UK and beyond has been repeatedly telling us for the past couple of months, we are already in a period of economic recession. As you will also be aware, this means a tough time for businesses small and large. A topic that might not immediately spring to mind when you think of this, however, is that of Employment Law and in particular the risks you are taking if you your employment procedures are not compliant. For both employees and employers alike, this is an area that needs to be closely inspected in case the recession reaches the low point that it is forecast to reach. Yet it’s not just the consequences of the credit crunch which might lead you to look at Employment Law a little more closely. Over the past 20 years there has been a steady rise in the amount of employees taking their employers to court over decisions that they felt, after seeking legal advice, were not in accordance with Employment Law. This has particularly been the case over the past five years since the introduction of a huge amount of protective employment law and regulations that companies now have to comply with. Although much if it is the codification of simple good practice, there are a number of areas where companies continue to trip up – indeed, it can be a minefield. It can be a traumatic experience for all parties involved, not to mention for those connected to parties involved, which is why knowledge in this field of law is especially useful. Good advice will reduce any stress and worry involved, so that you can rest assured that your procedures are watertight and potential claims are limited. There are various reasons as to why an employee might take legal action against his former (or sometimes current) employer. Three of the most frequent reasons include Harassment, Discrimination, and Unfair Dismissal.Discrimination is a common complaint, particularly since the instigation of the Human Right Acts, and it can take a number of forms. The grounds on which people are discriminated against comprise of anything including:1. Sex
2. Race
3. Disability
4. Religious Belief
5. Age
6. Sexual OrientationInstances in which it is unlawful for an employer to discriminate against you on the grounds of these include:o Refusing to employ or consider you for a job
o Offering you a job on less favourable terms than others
o Refusing to promote or transfer you to another job
o Giving you less favourable benefits than a colleague
o Shortening your working hours
o Dismissing you or making you redundantThere is a huge amount of legislation relating to the different types of discrimination and it is imperative that your company complies rather than facing the consequences of not doing so. If a disabled person was to take legal action against their employer then they would do so upon the basis of the Disability Discrimination Acts of 1995 and 2005, for example. Another illustration of this would be the 1976 Race Relations Act, which makes it unlawful for your employer to discriminate against you on the grounds of your colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins.Harassment on the grounds of sex, including sexual harassment, is considered to be direct discrimination and is strictly prohibited by law. In broad terms, harassment can occur where: Unwanted conduct on any of the areas covered by the discrimination laws is apparent; an intimidating, hostile, degrading or offensive atmosphere is created; or the person is the recipient of embarrassing jokes, offensive jokes, pranks, or unwelcome physical or sexual advances. In addition to Discrimination and Harassment, there is the matter of Unfair Dismissal. If you are an employee and feel your employer has dismissed you unfairly then you might be able to make an unfair dismissal claim to an Employment Tribunal. However, in most instances you will need to have been employed for at least a year to make a claim. The onus is on you as an employee to show you have been dismissed and your employer to show they have a valid reason for dismissing you and acted reasonably in the circumstances. An important thing to note here is that (again, in most instances) a claim must be made within 3 months of the effective date of termination. Nevertheless, this may be extended to 6 months in some situations.Ultimately, it can only be beneficial to stay abreast of Employment Law to make sure you are treated fairly and treat your employees fairly, and it is important to get professional legal advice on any matter that might lead to legal action. This knowledge, in turn, will reduce any stress on your part, which any employee or employer will admit is a welcome consideration regardless of the economic climate.
